Early Morning Hustle
Picture this: It’s 6:15 AM in Wellington, and I’m up before the roosters. Why, you ask? Well, I’ve got a ferry to catch! That’s right, folks – New Zealand is split into two main islands, and to get from one to the other, you’ve got to sail the Cook Strait.
Now, let me tell you, Wellington isn’t called the windiest city in the world for nothing. But lucky for us, the weather gods were smiling that day. No gale-force winds, just a light drizzle to keep things interesting.
The Ferry Fiasco
So, we roll up to the ferry terminal, and wouldn’t you know it – there’s a marathon happening in town! Streets are blocked, traffic’s a mess, and we’re stuck in a line longer than my grandma’s grocery list. Talk about cutting it close!
But here’s a pro tip for ya: when you’re traveling in an RV, always factor in extra time. We made it by the skin of our teeth, but boy, was it a nail-biter!
Smooth Sailing
Once we got on board, it was smooth sailing (pun intended). The ferry’s massive – cars, trucks, foot passengers, the works. And let me tell you, the views are to die for. Rolling hills on one side, endless ocean on the other. It’s like Mother Nature’s showing off, and I’m here for it.
South Island, Here We Come!
After about 3.5 hours, we docked in Picton, the gateway to the South Island. And let me tell you, the difference is night and day. The North Island? Bustling cities, busy highways. The South Island? Wide open spaces, barely a car in sight.
The Road Less Traveled
We hit the road towards Christchurch, but here’s where it gets interesting. The South Island is bigger than the North, but get this – it’s got way fewer people. We’re talking 12 people per square kilometer. In other words, it’s emptier than my wallet after a shopping spree!
Hanmer Springs Detour
Now, we were supposed to head straight to Christchurch, but where’s the fun in that? Instead, we took a detour to Hanmer Springs. Why? Hot pools, my friends. Nothing beats soaking in natural hot springs after a long day of travel.
Small Town Charm
Hanmer Springs is tiny – we’re talking 1,100 people tiny. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. We stocked up at the local supermarket (pro tip: groceries in New Zealand can be pricey, so brace yourself), found a cozy camping spot, and settled in for the night.
Wrapping Up
As I sit here, watching the stars come out over Hanmer Springs, I can’t help but feel grateful. This journey from North to South has been more than just a ferry ride and a drive. It’s been a reminder of why I love travel – the unexpected adventures, the friendly faces, and the stunning landscapes that take your breath away.
So, if you’re ever in New Zealand, don’t just stick to one island. Make the crossing, take the road less traveled, and who knows? You might just find your own slice of paradise in the land of the long white cloud.
Until next time, keep exploring!
