Antalya: Where My Travel Journey Began – A Love Letter to Turkey’s Hidden Gem

Hey there, fellow wanderers! Ever had a place that completely changed your life? For me, that’s Antalya, Turkey – a city that most Indians haven’t discovered yet (their loss, trust me!). Let me take you back to where my globetrotting adventure really began.

The Beginning: 2017’s Life-Changing Internship

Picture this: It’s 2017, and I’m fresh off my first real solo international trip. Sure, I’d been to the US before, but staying at my sister’s place doesn’t count as cultural shock, right? Antalya was different. This Mediterranean beauty threw me straight into the deep end of cultural immersion, and boy, am I glad it did!

Breaking Stereotypes

Here’s something that’ll blow your mind – Antalya might be in a Muslim-majority country, but it’s nothing like what you’d expect. Think bustling pubs, beach parties, and a vibe that’s more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern. And get this – it’s safer than many European cities, even for solo travelers at midnight!

The Local Life

Want to know what makes Antalya special? Here’s the scoop:

  • Tea that costs less than a dollar (and tastes like heaven)
  • Streets lined with friendly cats and dogs
  • A perfect mix of mountains and beaches
  • Prices that’ll make your Indian wallet very happy (thanks to the current exchange rate!)

The Nostalgia Trip

Coming back six years later felt like opening a time capsule. Every corner holds a memory:

  • The Octopus Book Cafe where we held English speaking sessions
  • Luna Garden, our go-to hangout spot
  • My old apartment with the Turkish flag on the balcony
  • The bus stop where I’d make daily mad dashes to catch my ride

Why Antalya Beats Switzerland (Yeah, I Said It!)

Look, I love my hometown Hisar (shoutout to my roots!), but for a short-term stay? Antalya takes the cake. And those Swiss views everyone raves about? Wait till you see what Antalya’s got up its sleeve – and at Indian prices, no less!

Living Like a Local

These days, I’m back in my old stomping grounds, hitting the gym (yes, even on vacation – gotta keep those muscles!), catching up with old friends like Ruveyda and Duygu, and rediscovering why I fell in love with this place.

For Future Travelers

If you’re thinking about visiting Turkey, here’s my two cents:

  • Skip the politics, embrace the people
  • Try the local tea (seriously, they drink more than anyone in the world)
  • Don’t be afraid to explore the old town, Kaleiçi
  • Budget tip: 1 Turkish Lira equals about 8 Indian Rupees now

The Heart of the Matter

You know what makes a place truly special? It’s not just the views or the prices – it’s how it changes you. Antalya taught me to travel independently, to embrace different cultures, and most importantly, to step out of my comfort zone.

So here I am, six years later, still finding new reasons to love this city. Whether you’re a first-time traveler or a seasoned globetrotter, Antalya deserves a spot on your bucket list.

Until next time, keep exploring!

P.S. If you’re ever in Antalya, hit up the Octopus Book Cafe and raise a cup of Turkish tea for me!
